In Genesis 19:29 we read that “God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt”. As I wrote in the THE SALT OF THE COVENANT Lot had no claim on God for his protection. After all, Sodom was his personal choice. The reason God saved Lot from the destruction of Sodom was only because “God remembered Abraham”.

We are told in Luke 18:28-32 that another day is coming of which Sodom is just a picture. There will be a world wide catastrophic event when many are taken out at the rapture. Now as Lot was saved from the destruction of Sodom, only because of Abraham, does it then not follow that there will be some taken out at the outpouring of wrath on the world because we are friends of Christ (John 15:14) and God remembers us? Three times in Scripture we are told that Abraham was a friend of God. One will do much for his friends.

Does that then work both ways? Lot’s wife would have felt quite safe because her husband, according to II Peter 2:8 was a righteous man. But she died in the overthrow. Luke 18:32 is very important here: “Remember Lot’s wife”. The angels certainly wanted to do their best for Lot. They even sent him out to talk to the rest of his family but they refused and died in the overthrow.

There is something similar in Mark 2:1-12. Here four men are carrying a sick man on a pallet to be healed. They encounter a problem; there is such a packed crowd that they can’t get to Jesus whom they trust can heal the man. So they climb up on the roof, remove some of the tiles and let the man down right at Jesus feet. He was truly impressed by their faith.

There were three things needed here on the part of the four:

1-They must have a personal knowledge of Christ and bring the man to the right person. (I think that some people supposedly saved today have not met the Christ of the Bible but a christ of someone’s imagination). Remember, Jesus said there would be many false christs who would deceive many.

2-They must themselves believe that Jesus was able to help the man.

3-They must somehow know that Jesus would not be angry because they interrupted His teaching.

“He seeing their faith”: this can have many applications.

In Leviticus 2:13 God tells the Israelites that they are never to bring an offering to Him without salt. Now the people of Israel, living at that time and place would understand the reasoning behind that. By eating together they would indicate a friendship, but if they took salt together or if you ate salt in someone’s house it was more of a covenant. You committed yourself to the other’s welfare. We read in II Chronicles 13:5 that God had made with David a covenant of salt.

Remember the old story of Ali Baba and the forty thieves? They discover that Ali Baba is the one who has found and taken their gold and jewels. The leader of the forty thieves comes to Ali Baba’s house. He is invited to stay for dinner, but claims that the doctor told him he was not to eat salt for health reasons. This arouses the suspicions of Marjana, the slave girl who kills the leader of the thieves and with the help of the other slaves eliminates the forty thieves , too.

There is a similar story in Genesis 18. Here three men come to Abraham. One is the LORD Himself and two angels although at first Abraham does not recognize them as such. He sees three men and invites them to stay for a meal. Abraham runs to the herd, picks out the best calf he can find, has Sarah get her women to work on the breads and puts a fine meal before them. We also read that Abraham stands by and watches them as they eat. As the host it was his duty to see that they would eat unhindered. When someone came into your home he came under your protection. We see another example of the Divine Humility. The God of Infinite Power places Himself under Abraham’s protection.

Now as far as commitment was concerned perhaps the most important part of the meal was the salt. He would be a thoughtless host who did not set a small container of salt within easy reach. Job, in chapter 6:6 raises the question: “Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt”? On the other hand, it would be an insult on the part of the guest not to sprinkle the salt on his food. Ali Baba’s slave girl did right in being suspicious of the guest who did not take the salt.

Is it possible that there is really an obligation on God’s part? It would seem so. From there the LORD and the two angels left to destroy Sodom. What would be Abraham’s greatest interest there? It would be the fact that his nephew Lot was in Sodom. We see in Genesis 19:29 that God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out before He destroyed the city. After all, He had no particular obligation to Lot. We see that the LORD Himself went back to heaven and sent the two angels on to Sodom to execute His plan there. It’s not hard to imagine that he left very specific instructions with the two angels to get Lot out of the city in time.

When the angels came to Sodom it was Lot himself who took them into his house. Now they were also obligated to Lot. We see that they then made every effort to get not only Lot but also his sons-in-law out. In the end, as Lot was lingering, one took his and his wife’s hand and the other the hands of the daughters and took them out of the city by force. The rest didn’t want to come. Lot, as a good host tried to protect his guests but failed. Fortunately, the two angels had a back-up plan. In Judges 13 there is a case where the LORD would not eat with someone. We do not read of anything that God had against him, but for some reason did not place Himself under obligation. Abraham was His friend: James 2:23. For ourselves see John 15:14 and Revelation 3:20.

Joseph’s brothers have sold Joseph to the Midianites. The Midianites were on their way to Egypt. They lie to their father, making him believe that a wild beast has killed him. Twenty two years have gone by and now they are in Egypt to buy food because of the famine. They do not recognize Joseph but he does recognize them. After testing them to see if their character had changed, he makes himself known to them and assures them of his heartfelt forgiveness.

The brothers are sent back with all the good things of Egypt, wagons for their wives and little ones and the news for Jacob. There was no doubt much discussion on just how they would break the news to their father, especially the part of Joseph being sold into slavery. Joseph, knowing how delighted Jacob would be just to know that his son was still alive added this wonderful bit of news; “Thou shalt tell my father of all my glory in Egypt”. Will we ever have an opportunity like this? Perhaps so. Remember that Egypt is a picture or symbol of the world. We read in Psalm 72:8: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth”.

We must keep in mind that the redeemed will “ever be with the Lord”. Will there not be some who will be especially commissioned; to whom He will say, “Thou shalt tell My Father of all My glory in Egypt”? This could be a few or a multitude.

THE WISDOM OF THE JUST

PROVERBS 11:3: “THE INTEGRITY OF THE UPRIGHT SHALL GUIDE THEM”.

It is certainly true that the Word of God is our guide, as we see in many places in the Scripture. We are told in Proverbs 3:6: “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths”. The important point here is that we not only are to hear or read the Bible but also that we carefully “observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you”: Matthew 28:20. God not only wants me to be a student of the Bible but he wants to see the Bible change me into being a righteous person; the kind of person He has in mind.

Proverbs 2:1-7 brings this out. It begins by encouraging me to search the Scriptures with the same eagerness that I would have if I were digging for hid treasure. I am assured that if I will do so He will give me wisdom and understanding. But here is the point. I do not automatically gain wisdom and understanding because I work so hard for it. It is just that God promises that if I study His Word diligently He will give to me His wisdom. Everything is based on faith in the statements and promises of God. Because I believe God I obey His commands to study His Word. Because I believe God I trust Him to fulfill His promises: “For the LORD giveth wisdom”. The rest of the verse tells us where wisdom can be found: “out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding”. The one, given the gift of righteousness knows in each situation the right thing to do. Therefore: “The integrity of the upright shall guide them”. I must always keep in mind that everything I have or ever will have is God’s gift to me, earned by the blood and death of Christ.

THE BOOK OF WISDOM

Proverbs 30:4 raises a different type of question. In Proverbs Two we are told what we must do to please God, in Proverbs Thirty the man is really asking: “Who is this God”? Can you imagine One coming to the man and telling him: “I Am the One Who created all this? Not only that, here is a book which tells you how you are to live successfully. Here I will quote the entire verse: “ Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in His fists? Who hath bound the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is His Name, and what is His Sons Name, if thou canst tell”?

God created the first man and the first woman, placed them in a beautiful garden and freely gave them all they needed. Although they sinned against Him, He took on Himself the punishment for their sin and grants them all that is needed not only for this life but also for the endless life to come. And all this, too, is free

Jacob, fleeing from his brother Esau, whom he had badly cheated, was running to his uncle Laban. That night, sleeping in the open he had a dream. In that dream Jacob saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven and angels going up and down the ladder. The LORD stood at the top of the ladder and promised to take care of Jacob and bring him back to the promised land.

The picture here is that God has provided for man a way from earth to heaven. But Jacob, waking up sees something else. To him this is a dreadful place. As he says: “How dreadful is this place; this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven”. Jacob met God. He found it to be a fearful thing. He was face to face with One Who had all power in His hands, including Jacob. We find in the Bible that it is the unbeliever who does not fear God. Jacob calls the place Bethel which means “house of God”.

Twenty years later Jacob returned to the promised land. God told him to take his family and to dwell in the area of Bethel. It was there he had the dream and met God. It was the “dreadful” place. Jacob lived here with his family for a number of years. Then he moved out of the area.

It was after Jacob’s family moved out of Bethel that Jacob’s oldest son, Reuben, fell into a very serious sin. And not only Reuben but Judah, too. When in Bethel God appeared again to Jacob and he was richly blessed. When he left the place of Bethel his sons caused him no end of problems.

Remember, Bethel was the “dreadful” place. Once they moved away from Bethel there was the sense of being where God was not. They lost the fear of God. Fear is often a very good thing. An absence of fear can be destructive for an individual or a society. Has this not happened when we removed the ten commandments from our schools?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. This is the first statement in the Bible. This was the beginning of the history of the world. We hear often about pre-history. Really, there is no such thing. History began about 6,000 years ago and the story of the Bible is really the story of the earth as God created it.

I know this idea is, to most people, hopelessly out of date. The historical accuracy of the Bible was generally believed until the last 150 years or so, The Bible itself predicted that people would stop believing this and other teachings of the Bible (particularly that of the flood of Noah) at the end of world history just before the Lord’s return to earth. We find this in II Peter 3:3-7: “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the Word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water; Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same Word are kept in store, reserved unto judgment against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men”.

God has recorded this in a Book. This book gives to me the history of the world from creation not only but also considerable detail regarding future events and the end of the age. The highly relevant thing to me is that God has given me this book. This book tells me of the history of the human race and therefore how I came into being. Even more important I am told how to prepare for the endless life to come. II Peter 1:3 explains this: “According as His divine power hath given us all things that pertain unto life and holiness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue”.

There are two very important points here, made in the last few words. The word glory speaks of heaven, the land of everlasting glory. God has given us a book which tells us what we must do to ensure our entry into heaven. The word virtue is simply an old English word for goodness,. In the Book God tells us His will to not only prepare us for heaven but also gives detailed instruction in this life; “which I command thee this day for thy good”: Deuteronomy 10:13. We se the same thing in Psalm 84:14 which speaks of giving us “grace and glory”. In other words; grace or help from God Himself to live in obedience to His Book amd glory when we die.

There are many things to say but I want to mention two:

1=God has given us the Book whioh we ignore at our own peril

2=God has given us a mind so that we are able to understand this Book: Isaiah 1:18: “let us reason together”

There are also two very important things in the last five verses:

1= Be careful to change nothing written in this book

2=Regardless of who you are “Come, its free”

A very important verse that we must think on when we see the God of the Old Testament or the God of Israel is Malachi 3:6: “I change not”. We read of Jesus weeping not only at the tomb of a friend but also as He looked over Jerusalem at His triumphal entry. Looking forward in time He sees her horrible future and fall. In the Old Testament, in Jeremiah 13:17 we read: “But if ye will not hear it, My soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and Mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive”
I think that we forget that the God of the Old Testament and the Lord Jesus are exactly the same Person. This is the One Who in Malachi makes the claim: “I change not”. Perhaps one of the clearest verses showing that Jesus is God is Titus 2:13: “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ”.
“And also that everyman should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God”: Ecclesiastes 3:13. This is God’s desire of how we should live. CS Lewis wrote that if the world would live by the rules God has set down we would see, in a very short time, worldwide peace, prosperity and happiness. But ancient Israel lived by their own rules and then blamed God for their problems. God was interested in their happiness and gave them a set of laws “for our good always”: Deuteronomy 6:24. God’s desire for Israel and His promise for their future is stated in Jeremiah 33:10 and 11: “Thus saith the LORD: Again there shall be heard in this place—The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride”.
As we go through the Old Testament we see the people of Israel constantly going their own way contrary to the laws of God and constantly suffering for their sins; either self caused or through God’s judgment. The other thing we see is that God always brings them back to Himself. Even now, they have been brought back to the land in fulfillment of God’s many promises. All Israel will turn to Him with a true heart of repentance just before the Lord’s return according to many Old Testament prophecies: Zechariah 12 and 13 especially.
America has fallen into all of the sins that Israel did and today we are suffering the results of our actions. I think we make a big mistake when we feel that our problems are the result of economic mistakes divorced from moral corruption. Somehow we have convinced ourselves that if we just get the economy back on track all will be well.
There is one cardinal truth that must be remembered: Israel is God’s chosen people. The promise is that God will always restore them. The same is not true of America. Ecclesiastes 11:3 fits quite well here: “Where the tree falls, there it shall be”.

Something like this doesn’t really happen (except maybe in fairy tales). Not only among earthly monarchs, but also among the gods of the nations this could not happen.
Only a few people are the king’s friends. And of the gods, none of them would stoop to ask friendship of people. All sacrifices are to placate the gods who are quick to take offence.
Only a few priests could get close to the gods. Throughout history there have been the mystery religions and only the priests were initiated into the mystery. These were the priests who could turn water into blood and produce serpents as in Moses day. It has puzzled me that they never seemed able to produce anything of value. Can ultimate evil only take that which is good and turn it into something bad or at least into something less good? But, at any rate, they were the few, the privileged. In the end the demon gods were ready to dispose of them, too, whenever they had lost their usefulness.
Of all earthly and heavenly monarchs only the God of heaven, the Most High, desires fellowship with the common man. He wants us to get to know Him. We read in John 17:3: “that they might know Thee the only true God”. Only a few priests were initiated into the mysteries. But all are invited into the mystery that Paul speaks of in Ephesians 3:9 “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery”. Of which earthly king could it be said, as in I John 1:1 “and our hands have handled”.
I think that when I was in Africa I saw more clearly the difference between the God of heaven and the gods of the pagans.

The title above is a direct quote from Exodus 20:5. This is God’s statement of Himself. I think that quite often the thought that one is a jealous person has with it negative connotations. We tend to think of one being jealous because his neighbor has something, whether it be a house, car or perhaps a beautiful wife, which are better than what he has. A better word here would be the word “covet”. In fact we find this word in the same passage in verse 17 where we are commanded not to covet anything that the neighbor has.
There is a perfectly legitimate jealousy such as that of a woman who has reason to believe that her husband is seeing another woman. There is also the jealousy of the parent who feels that the grandparents are stealing the children’s affections by giving them things the parents either cannot afford or would rather the children did not have.
The jealousy that the Bible refers to in Exodus is more like that of the parent protecting the child from someone who is catering to the child’s desire or lack of knowledge; with the result that the child will come to harm. The parent will experience a strong feeling of jealousy. This feeling will be even more intense if the parent is helpless to do anything about it. This, then, is the kind of jealousy that we must think of when we say that God is a Jealous God. This is made very clear in this same passage in verse 3: “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me”.
There are many false christs today, which Jesus Himself predicted would come. We expected this to happen, but I don’t think we thought that they would be so subtle. The problem is that when one accepts the false Christ he becomes immune to the Christ of the Bible. An example is the increasingly popular Message Bible. The last versus of the older Bibles use the term: “Lord Jesus Christ”. The Message Bible has changed this to: “the Master Jesus”. In the New Age movement the Master Jesus is one of many false Christs. When one becomes a follower of this Christ he thinks he is saved and will not receive the Christ of the Bible. Imagine the wrath of a jealous God against those who lead people into hell. The same can be said of many religious books today.
The simple gospel is: “there is none other name (Jesus Christ) under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”: Acts 4:12. In the book of Isaiah we see this gospel in the Old Testament. Israel was at a low point spiritually at this time. “the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint”: Isaiah I:5. But in this same chapter, in verse 18 God tells Israel: “Come now and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;”.. Isaiah 53:6 explains how God can forgive and heal this people: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all”. I know there are theologians who teach that the Lord Jesus died only for some, A jealous God is angry as this doctrine can make some believe that God may not be willing to save them.
Turning to the New Testament:
Romans 3:23: For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. As only one sin against God will send me to hell; then for me to be saved it must be by a gift.
John 14:6: I Am the Way, the Truth, And the Life: no man cometh to the Father but by Me.
John 3:16: for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Do not look for a light from heaven. God has spoken and expects to be believed and obeyed.
I want to add a story I have shared before but it is very relevant here. It shows the importance of finding the true Christ. In the far north there is a rock which is 1,000 miles long, 1,000 miles wide and 1,000 miles high. Every few hundred years a little bird sharpens it’s beak on that rock. When that rock has thus been worn away one day of eternity will have passed.

I don’t know if this will be of interest to many of you or if you will wonder if I have too much time on my hands. Anyway, I want to look at the book of Job. I know there are different ideas on when the story of Job happened. I think we can pinpoint quite closely the time that Job lived.
If we take the genealogy from the time of the flood to the time that Abraham entered Canaan we find it to be 427 years. This can be found in Genesis 11. When Abraham had been in Canaan for 25 years his son Isaac was born: Genesis 21:5.
Isaac was 60 years old when Jacob and Esau were born: Genrsis25:36. Esau was 40 years old when he married the two Hittites: Genesis 26:34.. Eliphaz, according to Genesis 36:10 was Esau’s oldest son. Eliphaz oldest son, as we see in the next verse=verse 11 was Teman.
Remember that Eliphaz was one of the friends of Job. We find him the fiRst time in Job 4:4. It would seem that Teman was Esau’s favorite. At any rate he named a city after him. For this also see Obadiah 9. We do know from Job 6:19 that Tema was existing at this time.
In Job 1:1 we read that Job was in the land of Uz. In Lamentations 4:21 we are told by Jeremiah that Edom was a part of the land of Uz. This would explain why Eliphaz knew Job. They may well have been neighbors. Now if Teman was old enough for Esau to notice him to the extent of wanting to build a city after him his father would be at least fifty or sixty. At least we know from Job 32: 6 that he was no longer a young man. Add all of this up and you come to just over 600 years after the flood. This would be about 30 or 40 years before the Israelites went to Egypt.
Now let’s look at the circumstances of the time. Notice in Job 1:3 all of the goods Job had. What would it not take to maintain this large household and all these animals? We do know Job paid fair wages. We see this in Job 31:13-15. There had to be a market for all these animals and at the same time a large area. As we look at the circumstances it seems that the time when Job lived would not be over two centuries. At this time there would have been a tremendous population explosion. This is why the market would be there. But what of a century or so later.
The story of Job was about 40 years before Jacob and his family went to Egypt. There they greatly multiplied in number. But so had the Canaanites. Look what had happened in Canaan. It was now full of people and cities. There would no longer be room for wandering nomads and their large herds if cattle. The children of Israel came to Edom which was in Uz where Job had lived. It too was filled with people and cities.
I suppose someone could say “so what”. I think my only defense is found in
Proverbs 25:2=It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. Why do people want to know of the farthest planet and the deepest ocean? Because it’s there.
